A smartphone is a mobile device that combines the functions of a regular phone with the capabilities of a computer. A modern smartphone allows you not only to make calls and send SMS, but also to perform a wide range of tasks, such as surfing the web, watching videos, working with e-mail, communicating in social networks and messengers, listening to music, watching movies and playing games. Most smartphones are equipped with high-quality cameras.

Smartphones run on operating systems (the most popular are iOS and Android), which allows you to install a variety of applications for work, entertainment, education, fitness, etc. Thanks to the built-in GPS, smartphones can be used as navigators. Smartphones support various platforms for messaging, voice and video calls.

Smartphones have become an integral part of everyday life, providing quick access to information, communication and entertainment.

The history of smartphones

In the 1970s and 1980s, the first prototypes of mobile phones appeared, but they were bulky and could only make calls. The idea of creating a device that would combine the functions of a phone and a computer appeared closer to the end of the 80s. In 1994, IBM released the Simon Personal Communicator, which became the world's first “smartphone.” This device supported basic functions such as e-mail, calendar, and address book. But its high price and bulky design prevented it from becoming widespread.

BlackBerry (then known as Research In Motion) launched a line of smartphones with a QWERTY keyboard and email support, which was a groundbreaking solution for business users. BlackBerry became popular among business people due to its secure communications and email capabilities.

In the 2000s, smartphones running Windows Mobile and Palm OS entered the market, adding new features from web browsing to file management. These devices offered more options for organizing tasks and working with data, but due to the limitations of touch screens and performance, they did not become widespread.

The Apple iPhone, released in 2007, radically changed the market. The iPhone was the first commercially successful device to provide an intuitive touchscreen interface, multi-touch, a full web browser, and easy access to a variety of applications. Apple also launched the App Store in 2008, which allowed developers to create applications for the iPhone and made it even more functional.

The Android platform, developed by Google, entered the market in 2008 with the HTC Dream (or T-Mobile G1). Android offered an open operating system that could be used by different device manufacturers. This stimulated competition and quickly made Android the most popular mobile platform in the world.

Since 2010, the smartphone market has grown rapidly. Manufacturers such as Samsung, Huawei, Xiaomi, and others have introduced their own models with new features such as high-quality cameras, biometric sensors (fingerprints, Face ID), and artificial intelligence for photo and video processing.

Smartphones now have super-powerful processors, large OLED screens, 4K video processing capabilities, and support for 5G networks. They have become central devices for work, school, and entertainment, and are constantly evolving with new features such as artificial intelligence, augmented reality, and high-quality camera systems.

The history of smartphones shows how a device that started out as a phone has evolved into a multi-purpose tool that has changed the way we work, communicate, and access information.

In Ukraine, the smartphone market is dominated by several major brands, with Xiaomi, Samsung, and Apple being the main leaders. And if we look at the statistics of 2019 (Samsung was the first, preferred by 23.82% of Ukrainian users, while Xiaomi was 21.53% and Apple was 20.68%) and 2020 (Xiaomi came out on top with 29.1%, Samsung was second with 24.51%, and Apple was third with 18.47%), then today, as we can see, the top three leaders have made the following rotation:

  1. Apple - 32.31% of the Ukrainian market;
  2. Xiaomi - 26.39% of the Ukrainian market;
  3. Samsung - 19.96% of the Ukrainian market.

Apple's rise to the top of the smartphone market in Ukraine can be explained by several key factors. First, Apple's official entry into the Ukrainian market in 2021 significantly increased the brand's presence and accessibility. This step allowed Ukrainian consumers to buy iPhones locally without relying on gray imports, increasing consumer confidence and access to warranties and support services that were previously more difficult to obtain. Apple's official products are available in iSpace mono-branded stores with Apple Premium Reseller status, as well as in popular retail chains: Comfy, Allo, Citrus, Rozetka, Foxtrot, KTS, Vodafone, Epicenter, Kyivstar, TTT, Brain, Moyo, ITbox, Cybernetics, Lifecell, Eldorado.

Secondly, despite the economic difficulties, many Ukrainians are choosing high-end smartphones as a durable and multifunctional investment. New models like iPhone 14 and iPhone 15, in particular, are doing well due to their unique features and strong brand appeal among loyal users. In addition, the iPhone 11 is still popular in Ukraine for several key reasons.

Xiaomi is strengthening its position with affordable models that offer good value for money. Samsung continues to hold a significant market share among users looking for reliable mid-range and premium devices. The country has also seen the rise of Chinese brands such as Vivo, Realme, and OPPO, adding to the competition.

In the global smartphone market as of 2024, Apple and Samsung remain the dominant brands, occupying the highest positions in the rankings. Apple is steadily strengthening its position thanks to the demand for iPhones, especially in the premium segment. This helps the company maintain leadership in several key markets, such as the US and Europe. In particular, as of the third quarter of 2024, Apple holds the lead in sales in many countries, thanks to its strong brand and the high popularity of new iPhone models.

Samsung also holds an important position in the market due to its wide range of affordable and mid-priced models, which provides the company with a significant share of sales globally. Xiaomi and other Chinese brands maintain a strong position due to the popularity of their budget and mid-priced smartphones, which attract customers in markets where affordability is a key factor.

  1. Apple - 28.38% of the global market;
  2. Samsung - 22.82% of the global market;
  3. Xiaomi - 10.62% of the global market;
  4. Vivo - 5.67% of the global market;
  5. Oppo - 5.39% of the global market.

The overall structure of the smartphone market is shaped around the premium segment, led by Apple, and the budget and mid-range segment, which remains highly competitive thanks to Samsung, Xiaomi, and other brands.

1st place: Apple - 28.38%

Apple continues to invest in new technologies, more powerful processors, improved cameras, and enhanced displays. The company is working to expand functionality through artificial intelligence and augmented reality. An important element of Apple's strategy is an ecosystem of devices and services (Apple Watch, AirPods, iCloud, Apple Music, Apple Pay, and other services). The interconnectedness of products encourages users to stay within the Apple ecosystem, which increases profitability and provides additional sources of revenue. This approach also strengthens brand loyalty and encourages repeat purchases.

Apple is firmly established in the high-end smartphone segment. Even during periods of economic instability, demand for iPhones remains high due to user loyalty and brand status. The premium segment tends to grow, especially in the US, Europe and China, which are important markets for the company. At the same time, Apple is actively working to expand its official presence in emerging markets, including India and a number of other countries.

Apple is actively working on environmental initiatives, including the transition to carbon-neutral production by 2030. This emphasis on sustainability helps the company attract customers for whom environmental values are important and strengthens the brand's reputation.

2nd place: Samsung - 22.82%

Samsung continues to invest in innovation, especially in the foldable smartphone segment, where the brand is a leader. Their Galaxy Z Fold and Galaxy Z Flip devices are setting the standard in the foldable phone market. This segment is expected to grow, and Samsung will maintain an advantage due to its experience and pioneering in this technology.

The brand remains popular in all price categories, from budget models (Galaxy A series) to premium (Galaxy S and Galaxy Z). Thanks to its wide range of devices, the company can meet a variety of needs and budgets, which ensures high sales on a global scale. Samsung is developing its ecosystem, which includes not only smartphones, but also tablets, smartwatches, TVs, and home appliances. Integration between Samsung devices attracts users who appreciate the convenience of a single ecosystem. This contributes to the growth of brand loyalty and sales among those who already use other Samsung devices.

Samsung is actively competing with Apple in the premium segment with its flagship Galaxy S and Z models. Recent innovations, such as improved cameras, high-performance processors, and artificial intelligence features, are helping Samsung attract new users and maintain demand for high-end devices.

The company is actively expanding its production capacity, including the construction of factories in India, to ensure supply chain efficiency and reduce costs. Samsung, like other major brands, is developing programs for sustainability, including reducing plastic waste, using recycled materials, and energy-efficient manufacturing.

3rd place: Xiaomi - 10.62%

Xiaomi remains one of the most popular brands in the segment of budget and mid-priced smartphones. The company is actively expanding its range of affordable models under the Redmi and POCO brands, which allows it to maintain a significant share in price-conscious markets such as India, Southeast Asia, and Eastern Europe. Xiaomi's budget series continues to be popular due to its value for money.

The brand strives to integrate advanced technologies even into mid-priced models. For example, the company is actively developing 5G technologies, improving camera quality and device performance. This allows Xiaomi to remain competitive in the market, attracting users who want high specifications at an affordable price. Xiaomi, like Samsung and Apple, is developing its own ecosystem, which includes smart home devices, wearable gadgets, TVs, household appliances, and other IoT (Internet of Things) products.

The company is actively expanding in emerging markets such as Latin America and Africa. These regions are promising for growth, as the demand for affordable smartphones there remains high. But despite its strong performance, Xiaomi faces strong competition from other Chinese manufacturers, OPPO, Vivo, and Realme. All of them are focused on similar market segments, so it is important for Xiaomi to maintain an innovative approach and retain customer loyalty.

Prospects and trends
